Communities nationwide are creating specialized disaster response teams to ensure that pet owners have the support they
need during evacuations and sheltering operations.
Pets America worked alongside the City of Austin,
the American Red Cross of Central Texas, and area emergency managers for four years to create and test a model for pet-friendly
sheltering operations and now works to implement that model in other communities.
In general,
you will need to complete an orientation with your selected organization, complete a background check, and complete all necessary
training to serve in your chosen role.
If you live in other parts of the country, look for opportunities
in your area to volunteer, and let us know if we can assist emergency managers with training and information about organizing
pet-friendly sheltering options.
Thank you for helping make it possible to keep both people
and pets safe during a disaster!
Pets America speaks to groups from any region of the U.S.
about the set up and management of pet-friendly shelters and facilitates disaster planning. Contact us if you need assistance
in your community.
