Become a Pets America volunteer

There's nothing like knowing how to help in an emergency.

If you live in Central Texas, please consider joining Pets America's Disaster Response Team. This team serves as a national model for pet evacuation and sheltering.

Or, if you live outside Central Texas, you can take the first step and contact your local emergency managers about disaster plans for animals. Pets America can offer you support as you volunteer in your community and make it possible for people to safely evacuate with their pets during a disaster.

Steps to Becoming a Pets America Volunteer

Step 1: Attend a One-hour briefing
This one-hour briefing offers an overview of the emergency response system in Central Texas and allows you, as a prospective volunteer, to decide whether and how you'd like to be involved.

Step 2: Complete a Volunteer Application
Pets America volunteers may serve on the Disaster Response Team as trainers, shelter supervisors, or shelter staff, and many volunteers also choose to volunteer with their local animal shelters or humane societies to keep their animal-handling skills current. Operations team members work on Pets America daily operations and special events. A complete list of volunteer positions and descriptions is available.

Step 3: Talk with Pets America staff
Pets America staff/partners will talk with you individually to decide which position is the right fit for your skills and interests.

Step 4: Complete background check
When your background check is complete, you will receive a letter of assignment.

Step 5: Training
You should complete the following minimum training, including:
1) Incident Command System Training (IS 100, IS 200) available online through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (links are provided at the top right of this page).
2) Pet First Aid & Disaster Response Workshop.
3) Volunteer meetings and disaster response exercises/drills as scheduled.

Pets America speaks to groups from any region of the U.S. about the set up and management of pet-friendly shelters and facilitates disaster planning. Contact us if you need assistance in your community.
If you would like to be considered for a position as a volunteer member of the Central Texas Disaster Response Team, or if you would like to discuss programs in your community, please email us for further details.
