Become a Pets America volunteer

There's nothing like knowing how to help in an emergency.

Communities nationwide are creating specialized disaster response teams to ensure that pet owners have the support they need during evacuations and sheltering operations.

Pets America worked alongside the City of Austin, the American Red Cross of Central Texas, and area emergency managers for four years to create and test a model for pet-friendly sheltering operations and now works to implement that model in other communities.

If you live in the Central Texas area, you can be a part of emergency response operations by becoming an affiliated volunteer with the American Red Cross of Central Texas, Town Lake Animal Center, Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter, or the Community Emergency Response Team. Research the organizations and give your time to the one that is the right fit for you.

In general, you will need to complete an orientation with your selected organization, complete a background check, and complete all necessary training to serve in your chosen role.

If you live in other parts of the country, look for opportunities in your area to volunteer, and let us know if we can assist emergency managers with training and information about organizing pet-friendly sheltering options.
